What weapons are illegal in New Jersey?

Blog

In response to the rising violence in many American regions, more people are interested in obtaining effective weapons to defend themselves. Most adults have the legal right to own weapons, but not all weapons are legal in all areas. Before you make a weapons purchase that could put you in legal jeopardy, it is important to know what is and is not allowed. The following sections contain insight into New Jersey’s complex weapons laws.

Illegal firearms and devices

Although not well-defined in state criminal code, destructive devices are disallowed in New Jersey. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), examples of destructive devices include:

  • Explosive or incendiary missiles with a charge greater than ¼ ounce
  • Weapons that could be easily converted to expel or propel projectiles

Several specific firearms, accessories and ammunition are also prohibited, including:

  • Sawed-off shotguns
  • Undetectable firearms
  • Armor-piercing ammunition
  • Large capacity ammunition clips

Firearms equipped with detachable or fixed magazines capable of containing 15 or more rounds are also illegal.

Illegal bladed weapons

Several types of bladed weapons or knives are against the law here in New Jersey. Examples include:

  • Switchblades
  • Gravity knives
  • Stilettos, daggers and dirks

A trend among the self-defense-minded is owning ballistic knives. They operate quickly and efficiently, making them popular for those who dislike guns. These weapons work by releasing and launching the blade at the target with the click of a button or latch. Known as the most illegal knife in the U.S., they are prohibited in New Jersey. If you are facing weapons charges, a good first step is learning more about the state’s firearm and knife laws. It’s also wise to seek legal guidance.
