Could you accidentally commit a crime if you get catfished?

Blog

Catfishing is essentially the process of lying about your identity online. The exact degree to which people carry this out varies from instance to instance. For example, there are some people who will use fake pictures or even videos to pretend to be someone that they aren’t, well others may simply lie about details, such as their age. This can be very problematic for those who are seeking sexual or romantic relationships on the internet. What if you get catfished and so you don’t really know who you’re meeting up with? Could you accidentally commit a crime?

It is possible, depending on the lies that were told

There are certainly ways in which getting catfished could put you into legal trouble. For instance, as noted above, people will sometimes lie about their age. Say that you meet someone who claims that they are 20 years of age, but they are actually only 15. If you meet up with them and engage in any sort of sexual activity, you run the risk of being arrested due to statutory rape laws or something else of this nature. You could be accused of sexual assault or illegal activities with a minor. You would certainly claim that you believed that they were 20 years of age and that you never intended to do anything wrong, but that doesn’t mean that you’re not going to face charges and it may not even mean that the authorities believe you. At a time like this, with such serious allegations, it is absolutely critical that you understand all the legal defense options at your disposal.
